Alexis Hernandez Rueda

Hello! I’m Alexis and I am a queer, first-generation college graduate currently based in Austin. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from Texas A&M University, and I am on track to receive my Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Texas State University with a concentration in Marriage, Couples and Family Counseling this May!

During my graduate studies, I researched geek culture as it intersects with trans identities. I have lived in many different areas, from Dallas, Texas to Guanajuato, Mexico. Getting in tune with my ancestors’ rural roots has shaped my identity and worldview. My lens of understanding intersecting identities contributes to my understanding of mental health where the environment cannot be ignored- from federal laws and marginalization to our local communities and families- it all shapes who we are!

Many of my clients are high-achieving individuals that feel immense pressure to succeed in a life that their families have not lived- whether exploring a professional career or a queer identity and lifestyle. My approach to therapy is collaborative and built on trust, empathy, and authenticity to explore the parts hidden beneath the high expectations. I use modalities called existential psychotherapy and narrative therapy, which essentially means leaning into the why behind your actions while accounting for aspects that have shaped your life story.

My role is to provide a nonjudgmental, comfortably-uncomfortable space where you can process your feelings and decide what meaning can be made from them. I understand that therapy can be a roller coaster, with great highs and often subsequent lows. There may be times when we want to get deep and other times when you need the space to process the week. As a believer in self-determination, I check in with you and follow your lead. Ultimately, you are the only one who knows your life and current emotional capacity. As collaborators, I hope to provide a space where you feel safe to express a pivot with our sessions to meet your needs. With clients coming in with their partners and/or families, my approach is more hands-on as we unpack the intention and meaning each person is trying to convey. This often means slowing down the conversational flow and checking in with each member on how they interpret the other’s message.

In my free time, I like gaming, hiking, caretaking my plant babies, weight-lifting, reading non-fiction, and watching queer media with my partner and sweet orange tabby Reuben.
