Emily "Em" Pencis, Therapist Intern

Whether this is your first or one of many experiences with therapy, thank you for taking the time to consider our potential fit! My priorities —as a counselor— include flexibility, curiosity, and collaboration. Together, I hope we can access not only active and practical coping skills, but a deeper understanding of why we do the things we do.

If you’ve ever felt like an outsider or struggled with loneliness, I want this space to be one where you are not only included, but prioritized. Many folks with neurodivergence feel othered or isolated. Many of us carry invisible burdens – from chronic pain conditions to perfectionism to pressures placed on gifted and talented teens.

For me, therapy is not about changing who you are at your core. It is the opportunity to acknowledge the past, learn to be mindful of the present, and to mold our existing strengths to serve our future selves. I have a particular interest in work with schema, attachment, and existential lenses as well as Radically Open DBT. You may come to therapy feeling that your suffering is invalid or that being truly seen and accepted is unachievable. My own experience has taught me that human connection and collaboration are not only possible, but transformative.

Personally, I am a queer, non-binary Austin native who loves and cherishes my community. I attended high pressure schooling in my youth and went on to attain an undergraduate degree in anthropology from UT at Austin. I believe that my varied experiences in undergrad, working as a bartender, escape room facilitator, and beyond have informed my curiosity and excitement when connecting with others form all walks of life. My free time is filled with hobbies like exploring the greenbelt with my dog, all kinds of gaming, crafting, and collaborative storytelling.
