Joslyn Ridgely, LPC
Senior Counselor
Fully Licensed
Specialized in Emotion-Focused Therapy

Welcome to Therapy Austin! Thanks for checking out my page.

I believe our human emotional experience is vital. Anger can tell us when a boundary is crossed, anxiety can tell us when we need more information, happiness can tell us when our needs are met… We’re often taught that some emotions are good, and some are bad. It’s easy to let ourselves have some feelings, but what happens when we have a “bad feeling”? To cope, we often adopt maladaptive patterns that are not conducive to a sustainable lifestyle or a healthy relationship with ourselves or others.

Perhaps you hold others responsible for your feelings. Do you abandon your own needs to keep from upsetting others? Maybe you avoid your feelings and cope externally (like drinking or reckless behaviors). These are a few examples of unchecked, maladaptive coping mechanisms that can prevent growth and keep us stuck in survival mode.

I believe in the power of approaching yourself with curiosity instead of judgement, and the intention to understand before you try to fix. An important part of changing our maladaptive patterns is to build insight into our tendencies and patterns that we typically ignore or find shameful… It is my goal to help you understand where these tendencies come from, and overtime replace them with more helpful ones. My therapeutic work is emotion-focused and heavily influenced by DBT. So, there will be an emphasis on: balancing emotion and logic, increasing tolerance for discomfort and distress, building self-compassion, improving emotional expression and communication, making connections between childhood/past experiences and their impact on adult life, and boundary-building. The areas I tend to work with most are: ADHD, depression, anxiety, autism, family-of-origin issues, and mood disorders.

I’d describe myself as warm and down-to-earth, with an active sense of humor. I received my Master’s in Counseling and Development from Texas Woman’s University and love what I do! When I’m not working, a few of my favorite things are 70’s rock ‘n’ roll, animals, being outdoors, reading mystery and horror, Thai food, and spending time with my partner and pets. If any part of my profile resonated with you, please reach out!
