1. Get Out of Network Reimbursement

We’ve partnered with Mentaya, a service that helps you get out-of-network reimbursement. They handle the paperwork and file the claims on your behalf. If your insurance approves the claim, you’ll get a check in the mail for part of the cost of your sessions.

  • We cover the cost of the Mentaya membership for you.

  • You just pay a small 5% fee per session (based on the cost of your session).

  • Approximately 70–90% of our clients are eligible for some form of reimbursement.

  • On average, people receive reimbursement for 50-70% of their therapy costs.

  • Risk-free: If you don’t get reimbursed, you’ll get your Mentaya fee back.

2. File a Superbill Yourself

Would you prefer to handle getting reimbursed for therapy yourself? At Therapy Austin, we are happy to provide you with a superbill.

Filing a superbill allows you to potentially get reimbursed by your insurance company for your therapy sessions. It’s one of the simplest and most flexible ways to use your out-of-network benefits.

You have control over the process: You submit the superbill directly to your insurance, providing more transparency and oversight.

3. Use Your FSA or HSA Account

You can also use your FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account) by itself, or in conjunction with Mentaya or your superbill claim, to cover the balance. An FSA or HSA can significantly help cover the cost of therapy by allowing you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses—including mental health services.

Because FSA and HSA funds are not taxed, using them for therapy can reduce your overall out-of-pocket cost by 20–30% or more, depending on your tax bracket.

Most FSA/HSA accounts come with a debit card you can use to pay for your sessions directly, just like any other card.

Does Therapy Austin accept my insurance?

To ensure we provide the highest quality care, our practice is not in-network with any insurance providers. However, we partner with Mentaya Health, a service that helps clients file out-of-network reimbursement claims and get reimbursed for therapy directly from their insurance provider, often as a check in the mail. We’re also happy to provide a superbill (a detailed receipt of your therapy sessions) that you can submit to your insurance company yourself. If you have any questions about using Mentaya or submitting a superbill, we’re here to help.

You are eligible if your insurance plan has out-of-network benefits (PPO, POS, and HDHP plans). HMOs, Medicaid, and traditional Medicare plans do not offer out-of-network (OON) benefits. Use this benefits calculator to see if you qualify.

You can quickly check your out-of-network therapy benefits using our Reimbursements Calculator.  It only takes a few seconds. Because coverage varies by plan, the best way to get specific answers is to contact your insurance provider directly. Most calls take less than 10 minutes, and many insurance companies also offer live chat if you’d rather not call.

When you sign on with Therapy Austin as a client, we will email you an invitation to join Mentaya Health.  It is optional for you to join.

If you sign up for Mentaya, Mentaya will submit claims on your behalf. Our practice will submit the fees to Mentaya on your behalf after each session.  Mentaya will charge you a fee of 5% of your therapy cost in order to file your claim, which will include handling any paperwork required, dealing with denials, and calling insurance companies.

This process is risk-free: Mentaya guarantees that if claims are not successfully submitted, you will receive a full refund of their fees.  All you have to do is wait for your insurance reimbursement checks to arrive in the mail / direct deposited into your bank account.

The exact amount of your reimbursement for therapy will depend on your particular insurance plan. PPO plans can cover anywhere from 30-80% of the session cost.

Once you meet your deductible, it takes a few weeks for you to get reimbursed. Mentaya will submit claims after every session to help you get reimbursed as quickly as possible.

If you’re wondering how to get reimbursed for therapy, using a superbill is one of the most effective options. Simply ask our Operations Coordinator, Mary Torkelson (mary@therapyaustin.com), for a copy of your superbill. A superbill is a detailed receipt of your therapy sessions that includes all the necessary information your insurance company needs to process a claim, such as session dates, fees, and diagnosis codes.

After paying for your sessions out of pocket, simply submit the superbill to your insurance provider via their online portal or by mail. If your plan includes out-of-network coverage, you may receive partial reimbursement for each session.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas asks that claims be submitted within 95 days of your therapy session. You can complete this electronically or by using a standard claim form, such as the CMS-1500 or UB-04. To make sure you’re eligible for reimbursement, be sure to file within that 95-day window—claims submitted after that may not be covered.

Yes, you can use your FSA or HSA card to cover the cost of therapy sessions.  Doing so will allow you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for your therapy sessions, which means you will get 20-30% savings, depending on your tax rate.

Our counselors have different rates based on their level of experience and skills, ranging from $110 to $200 per session. Many of our counselors also offer sliding scale pricing as well.

We also offer affordable group therapy for $65 per session.

At Therapy Austin, we reserve dedicated time just for you to ensure you receive focused, personalized care. When appointments are missed or canceled without enough notice, it prevents us from offering that time to someone else who may be waiting for support.

We charge a no-show or late cancellation fee to protect the integrity of our scheduling and to honor the time and preparation your therapist commits to each session. The fee is the same as the therapy appointment.

To avoid this fee, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a confirmed appointment.

Thank you for your understanding.

We would be happy to address any questions you have. Please contact Mary Torkelson (mary@therapyaustin.com), our Operations Coordinator, with any questions
