Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an empirically-based approach that applies acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase your ability to build resilience. ACT clinicians use metaphor, paradox, and experiential exercises to help clients learn how to make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, memories, and physical sensations that may have been avoided before.
ACT is an action-oriented approach to counseling that draws from traditional behavior and cognitive therapies. Through exploration and exercises, clients learn how to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions. By learning that these deeper feelings are normal responses to certain situations, acceptance can be gained. Further, clients discover that even though these emotions may feel painful, they aren’t a roadblock to moving forward in life. Once this is understood, clients can commit to making needed changes in their behavior that align with their values and personal goals. Optimistic confidence is built.
ACT has been used effectively to help treat workplace stress, test anxiety, social anxiety disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic pain, and substance abuse. To learn more about ACT, check out this site.
